Security Council
Under the UN Charter, the main goal of the Security Council is to preserve
stability and peace around the globe. It consists of 5 permanent (China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, the United States) and 10 non-permanent members elected for a two year period by the General Assembly. Right now, the non-permanent members are: Bolivia, Côte d’Ivoire , Ethiopia, Equatorial Guinea , Kuwait , Kazakhstan, Netherlands, Sweden, Peru and Poland
Each member has only one vote. The decisions reached by the Council are adopted by all member states of the UN. The first meeting of the Security Council dates back to the 17th of January, 1946 in Westminster, London. Currently the UN Headquarters in New York host the meetings of the Council. When a threat to international peace and stability appears, the Security Council strongly suggests that a diplomatic solution, by peaceful means, is reached. If the Council’s attempts fail, it may proceed to enforcement measures, such as economic sanctions or even military action. The primary concern of the Council is to punish those who violate the international regulations and constitute a threat to the community, while minimizing the collateral damages.
At this point, it should be highlighted that the Security Council of ARCMUN is a Crisis Committee. Therefore, apart from the Council's topic, it will most probably have to discuss about and find an immediate solution to issues and events that will arise during the days of the conference.
