3RD GA - SOCHUM
The Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) or commonly referred to as the Third Committee of the General Assembly was formed in 1945 as one of the main subsidiary organs of the General Assembly allocating agenda items relating to a range of social and humanitarian affairs, as well as, human rights issues that affect people all over the world. Since it is a main committee of the GA, all Member States may be represented and have the right to vote.
The Committee addresses important social development questions such as issues related to youth, family, ageing, people with disabilities, crime prevention, criminal justice and drug control. An important part of the agenda of the Committee is also examination of human rights questions, reports from Special Rapporteurs, Special Representatives, Working Groups and other Special Procedures as well as from the Human Rights Council.
